Beginning Sewing ~ February Class

Beginning Sewing Class
In this Beginning Sewing class, students will build a strong foundation in essential sewing skills while gaining confidence using a sewing machine. This class is designed for brand-new sewists or those looking for a refresher in the basics, with hands-on instruction and guided practice throughout.
Students will begin by learning sewing machine fundamentals, including proper terminology, threading the machine, winding a bobbin, and understanding basic machine functions. Practice stitching will be done on paper (without thread) to develop control, accuracy, and comfort sewing straight lines, curves, corners, and parallel lines.
As the class progresses, students will explore common machine stitches such as straight stitch and zigzag stitch, and learn how these stitches are used in basic construction. Foundational seam techniques will be introduced, including:
-
Plain seams
-
Edge stitching
-
French seams
-
Zigzagged seams
-
Turned and stitched finishes
Fabric basics will also be covered, including identifying the right side vs. wrong side of fabric, understanding fabric grain, and recognizing grain-straight vs. cross-grain. Students will learn measuring skills, including how to read a ruler and tape measure accurately, and how measurements relate to both fabric and simple garment or home décor construction.
To apply these skills, students will complete a guided project:
Cut and sew a sofa-size square pillow with an envelope-style back closure.
This project reinforces measuring, cutting, seam construction, and finishing techniques in a practical, achievable way.
All supplies for the class project will be provided.
By the end of the class, students will have a completed project and the confidence to continue sewing independently, enroll in future classes, or begin personal sewing projects at home.
